What is Memorial Merits?
Memorial Merits is a free end of life planning platform for families. It covers legacy and estate planning, funeral and cremation planning, and grief support and remembrance, with free tools, free guides, funeral home and cemetery directories for every state, and reviews of the partners it has vetted. It was founded by Gabriel Killian and it does not charge families or ask for an email address to use any of it.

What should you do first when someone passes?
Start the death certificate and order enough certified copies, notify family, the employer, the insurer, the bank and Social Security in that order, choose a funeral home from the state directory before signing anything, and read the FTC Funeral Rule so you know you can ask for an itemized price list. The first 72 hours section on this page lists those steps with the page that walks you through each one.
What free tools does Memorial Merits offer for funeral and estate planning?

Memorial Merits publishes a directory page for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Each state page lists funeral homes and cemeteries by city, the average funeral and cremation cost in that state, the federal rights that apply at every funeral home, and the state’s own funding programs. The 51 state pages are linked in the state section of this page, under the Funeral and Cremation Costs by State directory.
How does Memorial Merits choose the partners it recommends?
Every partner is researched before it is listed: the company’s background and history, customer reviews, its Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot records, and whether it fits the families Memorial Merits serves. The test for each one is whether Gabriel Killian would recommend it to a close friend or family member, and partners that stop meeting the criteria are removed. What to Do in the First 72 Hours After a Loss
The first three days after a death decide most of what a funeral costs and most of what the family has to redo later. The seven steps below are in the order they come up. Each one links to the page that walks you through it.
