What a Funeral and Cremation Actually Cost in Wisconsin, and What You Do Not Have to Pay
A traditional funeral with burial and viewing runs $7,000 to $10,000 across Wisconsin once the casket, vault, service fees, and cemetery plot are combined, close to the 2023 national median of $8,300. Against that, verified providers arrange a direct cremation from about $1,095, though some full-service funeral homes post the same no-frills service in the mid-$4,000s. The gap between the first quote a Wisconsin family hears and what the same service actually costs is one of the widest reasons to compare three price lists before signing anything.
This page holds the real numbers, county by county, next to the rights Wisconsin and federal law write into the process for you: the itemized price list a funeral home must hand you before you commit, the 48-hour cremation waiting period, and the strong pre-need rule that keeps every prepaid dollar in trust until it is needed. One Wisconsin quirk to watch is the county cremation permit fee, which the coroner or medical examiner charges on top of the provider’s price and which ranges from about $170 in Winnebago County to $393 in Milwaukee County.
If the loss just happened and you only have a minute, start with the help paying section and the rights that protect you. Everything else will still be here when you are ready.
A funeral in Wisconsin costs far less than most families are first quoted. A traditional burial with viewing runs $7,000 to $10,000, while a direct cremation can be arranged from about $1,095. Wisconsin law also protects you in ways most families never hear about, from a 48-hour cremation rule to one of the strongest pre-need trust protections in the country.
- Direct cremation: from about $1,095 with low-cost providers, though full-service homes sometimes post it in the mid-$4,000s.
- Traditional burial with viewing: $7,000 to $10,000; a simpler direct burial averages roughly $4,500 to $5,500.
- Green or natural burial: roughly $2,500 to $4,000, between direct cremation and a traditional burial.
- Water cremation and human composting are not yet legal in Wisconsin, so both are arranged out of state through a local funeral director.
- Cremation waits 48 hours after death (Wis. Stat. 979.10), plus a county coroner or medical examiner permit that adds $170 to $393.
- No embalming is required by Wisconsin law.
- Pre-need funds stay in trust until death under Wis. Stat. 445.125, a strong consumer protection.
- Death certificates: $20 for the first certified copy and $3 for each additional copy ordered at the same time.

Every figure below comes from published Wisconsin price lists, county fee schedules, and national survey medians, not from a single funeral home’s marketing. Treat the averages as a starting point: the Milwaukee and Madison metros sit at the higher end for services and permits, while much of rural Wisconsin sits below. A direct cremation can be found for a headline price under $2,000, while a traditional funeral with viewing still ranks among the largest bills a family faces in a single week.
| Option | Wisconsin low | Wisconsin typical | What it includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct cremation | $1,095 | $1,450 to $2,900 | Cremation only, no service; add the county permit fee |
| Full-service cremation | $4,250 | About $6,280 | Viewing, service, urn, cremation |
| Direct or affordable burial | $4,500 | $4,500 to $5,500 | Simple burial, no viewing; plot extra |
| Traditional burial with viewing | $7,000 | $7,000 to $10,000 | Service, casket, vault, plot combined |
| Burial plot | About $1,000 | $1,000 to $4,000+ | Grave only; opening and closing adds $1,000 to $2,500 |
| Green or natural burial | $2,500 | About $3,335 | No vault or embalming; biodegradable container |
| Water cremation | Out of state | Not yet authorized in Wisconsin | Alkaline hydrolysis; arranged through a local funeral director |
| Human composting | Out of state | Not yet authorized in Wisconsin | Natural organic reduction; arranged out of state |
Two line items deserve special attention. The cemetery plot is not included in the service figures above, and it swings widely by location, from around $1,000 in a small-town cemetery to $4,000 or more in a metro memorial park, with opening and closing adding $1,000 to $2,500 on top. And on any cremation, the county coroner or medical examiner charges a separate permit fee, from $170 in Winnebago County to $393 in Milwaukee County, which is why two “same price” cremation quotes can still land at different totals.
Estimate Your Own Wisconsin Funeral Cost
State averages only get you so far. A two-minute estimate built around your county, your choice of burial or cremation, and the services you actually want gives you a number you can hold any funeral home’s quote against, line by line.
Help Paying for a Wisconsin Funeral Right Now
Nobody plans to owe eight or ten thousand dollars in a week. Wisconsin does not run a broad statewide funeral or burial assistance program, so help is county-level: contact your county human services or social services department and ask about burial or cremation assistance for indigent decedents, which many counties provide. The federal Social Security Administration also pays a one-time lump-sum death payment of $255 to an eligible surviving spouse or child. Beyond those, the three fastest legitimate ways Wisconsin families cover a bill are a free funeral fundraiser, a personal loan, and choosing direct cremation over a full-service funeral.
Start a Free Funeral Fundraiser
When the cost lands faster than the paychecks do, a fundraiser built for funerals gives everyone who wants to help one clear place to do it. It is free to start, and the funeral framing is why these pages so often cover most of the cost within days.

Start a Free Fundraiser ›Your Rights as a Wisconsin Family
The FTC Funeral Rule is federal law in all fifty states, and it exists because funeral pricing used to be a black box. It gives you the right to an itemized General Price List, a separate casket price list, and an outer-burial-container list, the right to choose only the goods and services you want with no forced bundling, the right to bring your own casket or urn with no handling fee, and the right to decline embalming, which Wisconsin law does not require.
When the Money Is Not There Yet
If the person who passed held the household together, a personal loan can cover the funeral now and let you pay it back over time. Checking your rate through the Upstart lending platform takes minutes and does not affect your credit.
Check Your Rate in Minutes
Checking does not affect your credit. Loans through the Upstart platform range from 1,000 to 75,000 dollars, and funds can arrive the next business day.
Check Your Rate ›Wisconsin Funeral Consumer Protection Laws
Wisconsin layers its own rules on top of the federal Funeral Rule. Funeral directors and establishments are licensed under Chapter 445 of the Wisconsin Statutes, administered by the Department of Safety and Professional Services and its Funeral Directors Examining Board, with cremation and preneed rules spread across Chapters 979, 440, and 445. A few of these rules genuinely help a grieving family.
Create a Free Memorial Page
Between the arrangements and the paperwork, families often want one calm place to gather what a person meant to them. A free memorial page lets relatives across Wisconsin and beyond add photos and memories at their own pace.

Create a Free Memorial ›How Much Does Cremation Cost in Wisconsin?
Direct cremation is the least expensive disposition in Wisconsin, arranged from about $1,095 with low-cost providers; the Cremation Society of Madison lists $1,450 online and $1,650 in person, while a Milwaukee-area funeral home posts the same service in the mid-$4,000s. That spread is why comparing two phone quotes saves the most money here. A full-service cremation with a viewing and ceremony runs around $4,250 and up, near the national median of $6,280. On every cremation, remember to add the county coroner or medical examiner permit fee of $170 to $393.
| Cremation type | Starts at | Wisconsin typical | What it includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct cremation | $1,095 | $1,450 to $2,900 | Cremation only, no service or viewing. Add the county permit fee of $170 to $393. |
| Cremation with a service | $4,250 | about $6,280 | Viewing, service, urn, and cremation. |
| Water cremation | Out of state | Not offered in WI | Alkaline hydrolysis is not yet authorized in Wisconsin; arranged out of state through a local funeral director. |
One Way to Freeze Today’s Cremation Price
Cremation prices climb every year, and Wisconsin is climbing with the national curve. If you are planning ahead rather than in the middle of a loss, locking a rate today is worth a serious look.
Where Families Overpay on Urns
If cremation is the path, the urn is the one purchase where families most often overpay at the funeral home. Both options below ship directly to you or to any Wisconsin funeral home.
Cremation vs Burial in Wisconsin
The honest comparison is not about which choice is right, because that answer belongs to your family. It is about knowing what each path actually costs in Wisconsin before a package price makes the decision for you, and here the cemetery plot moves the math more than any other single line item.
| Direct cremation | Traditional burial | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical Wisconsin cost | $1,095 to $2,900 | $7,000 to $10,000 |
| Cemetery plot | Not required | $1,000 to $4,000 or more, plus opening and closing |
| Vault or grave liner | Not required | Often required by the cemetery, and adds to the total |
| Embalming | Not required | Commonly added, though Wisconsin never requires it |
| The bottom line | Lowest-cost path | Several thousand dollars higher on average once the plot is counted |
Why Cremation Prices in Wisconsin Keep Rising
Cremation is on its way to becoming the default in this country, and prices are rising with demand. The national cremation rate passed 62 percent in 2025 and is projected to keep climbing toward roughly 71 percent by 2035. Wisconsin runs above the national average, near 70 percent already, which is exactly why locking a price today is worth considering if you are planning ahead.
| Year | U.S. cremation rate |
|---|---|
| 2005 | 32% |
| 2010 | 41% |
| 2015 | 49% |
| 2020 | 56% |
| 2023 | 60% |
| 2025 (projected) | 62% |
| 2030 (projected) | 67% |
| 2035 (projected) | 71% |
Lock In Today’s Price Before It Climbs

Water Cremation (Alkaline Hydrolysis) in Wisconsin
Water cremation, formally alkaline hydrolysis and sometimes called aquamation, uses water, alkalinity, and gentle heat instead of flame. It is legal in more than two dozen states, but Wisconsin is not yet one of them: the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association confirms it is not currently offered to Wisconsin families, and the state has no law authorizing it, though legislation has been under review.
If water cremation is important to your family, the path is out of state. A local funeral director can coordinate transport to a licensed facility in a state where the process is legal and return the remains to Wisconsin, and it is worth asking a director for the all-in figure, including transport, before you compare it against flame cremation. Because it is not offered in state, there is no established Wisconsin price point yet.
Green Burial in Wisconsin
A natural burial in Wisconsin runs roughly $2,500 to $4,000, sitting between direct cremation and a traditional burial, with no embalming, no vault, and a biodegradable shroud or simple wooden casket. Wisconsin’s first dedicated green cemetery, Natural Path Sanctuary at the Farley Center near Verona, opened in 2011 and is certified by the national Green Burial Council, on a 25-acre nature preserve.
Other options are spread across the state. Circle Cemetery at Circle Sanctuary near Barneveld is one of the oldest green cemeteries in North America, the City of Waukesha’s Prairie Home Cemetery lists a natural burial section with a full-size total near $3,335, and historic Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee added a green section called Prairie Rest with no vaults. If a ground you love is not listed here, call and ask whether they accept vault-free burial, since hybrid green sections continue to open inside conventional cemeteries. A biodegradable casket or shroud completes the approach, and it can come from any seller you choose.
Shop Caskets Direct and Skip the Markup
Federal law requires every Wisconsin funeral home to accept a casket you bought elsewhere, with no handling fee. The same casket from the showroom often costs two to three times the direct-shipped price, so this is one of the clearest places to save.
Shop Caskets and Eco Caskets Direct
Traditional, eco, and willow caskets shipped to any Wisconsin funeral home or natural burial ground, at a fraction of in-house pricing.
See How Casket Savings Work ›Human Composting in Wisconsin
Natural organic reduction, commonly called human composting, gently transforms a body into soil over several weeks. A small but growing number of states have legalized it, but Wisconsin has not, and there is no state law authorizing it yet, so it is not available in state.
As with water cremation, families who want this option arrange it out of state through a provider that coordinates transport, and the returned soil comes back to Wisconsin. If this choice speaks to you, it belongs in your pre-planning conversation now so your wishes are on record, and ask any provider for the all-in figure, including transport, before you decide.
How to Get a Death Certificate in Wisconsin
You will need certified copies of the death certificate for banks, insurance, property, the DMV, and benefits, and most families underestimate how many. Plan for 6 to 10 certified copies, since each bank, insurer, brokerage, and pension office usually wants its own original. In Wisconsin, the first certified copy costs $20 and each additional copy ordered at the same time costs $3, a fee that is uniform across counties. For recent deaths, order through the county Register of Deeds where the death occurred.
You can also order through the state Vital Records Office in Madison, by mail with an application, or online and by phone through the state’s authorized vendor VitalChek at 877-885-2981. In-person county requests are often same-day, while mail and state requests run longer depending on volume. Your funeral director routinely orders the first batch of certified copies on the family’s behalf as part of arrangements, so check the invoice against the $20 and $3 figures.
Wisconsin Funeral Home Directory
Every funeral home below was verified through public sources and can be checked against the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Examining Board in seconds through the state license lookup. No home pays to be listed, and the roster skews strongly toward family-owned independents, including several long-established Black-owned firms in Milwaukee. A one-line cost note sits above each city so you can weigh a quote against the local reality before you call. Jump to your county, then your city.

Wisconsin Veterans Cemeteries
Wisconsin operates three state veterans cemeteries through the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, on top of Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee. Eligible veterans are buried at no cost, and spouses and dependents may also qualify. Bring the DD-214 to verify eligibility, and confirm current benefit specifics before paying for anything a benefit already covers.

| Wood National Cemetery | Milwaukee | VA national | On the grounds of the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, with more than 40,000 interments. |

| Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery | King | State veterans | In Waupaca County, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King, with open burial space. |

Cremation in Wisconsin: How It Works
Wisconsin licenses funeral directors, establishments, and crematory authority under Chapters 445 and 440 of the statutes. Every cremation requires two things before it can proceed: authorization from the legal next of kin, and a cremation permit from the county coroner or medical examiner. On top of that, no one may cremate a body until at least 48 hours have elapsed from the death under Wisconsin Statute 979.10, unless the state health department waives it for a contagious or infectious disease.
Two costs surprise families. First, the county permit fee is separate from the funeral home’s price and varies widely, from about $170 in Winnebago County to $393 in Milwaukee County. Second, some Wisconsin funeral homes operate their own on-site crematory while many others contract with a licensed crematory, so the crematory fee is sometimes bundled and sometimes a separate line item. Always ask whether a quoted cremation price includes both the crematory fee and the county permit before you compare. Verified homes with on-site crematories include Bevsek-Verbick in West Allis, Purath-Strand in Racine, Wichmann in Appleton, Proko-Wall and Malcore in Green Bay, and Smith Funeral Chapel in Eau Claire.
Headstones and Grave Markers in Wisconsin
In Wisconsin, flat markers commonly run $400 to $1,500, single upright headstones $1,000 to $3,000, and custom uprights pass $5,000, with cemetery foundation and installation charges adding several hundred dollars or more. Federal law requires the cemetery to accept a marker you bought elsewhere as long as it meets their published size and material rules, so get those rules in writing before ordering anywhere.
Personalized Granite Markers from $100
Shipped direct to the cemetery for a fraction of the in-house price. Federal law requires the cemetery to accept an outside marker that meets its size rules.

If you are reading this before a loss, you are in the strongest position a person can be in: every price is negotiable, every option is open, and Wisconsin gives you one real advantage most states do not, since a prepaid contract under Wisconsin Statute 445.125 keeps every dollar in trust until it is needed. Write your wishes down, favor established firms, and price the plot and the service separately. If water cremation or human composting matters to you, note that both are still out-of-state arrangements in Wisconsin, so record that wish now. Your family inherits decisions already made instead of a bill they have to argue about in the hardest week of their lives.
