Two things follow from that, and both matter to you. The first is that the timeline is not in your funeral home’s hands the way a waiting period would be, so if a provider tells you cremation can happen tomorrow, the right question is whether the permit has been issued, not whether enough hours have passed. The second is that this is not a formality anyone should be casual about: cremation without the required license and permit is a felony in Oklahoma. On top of the permit, express written authorization for final disposition from the authorizing agent is required under the Funeral Services Licensing Act at Title 59.

For the ground itself, Oklahoma has Green Tree Burial Grounds in Mead and Green Haven Cemetery in Stillwater, both dedicated natural burial grounds, and Woodland Memorial Park in Sand Springs, a conventional cemetery with green burial sections. We are not going to tell you which of them carry Green Burial Council certification, because certification status and natural-burial practice are two different things and we have not verified the first for these grounds. Check any certification claim yourself against the Green Burial Council provider map before it factors into your decision. If a ground you love is not listed here, call and ask whether they accept vault-free burial; hybrid sections keep opening inside conventional cemeteries.

A natural burial ground will not accept a sealed metal casket, and the funeral home showroom is rarely where the biodegradable ones are cheapest.

How to Get an Oklahoma Death Certificate

This is the single most searched Oklahoma funeral question, roughly 2,400 times a month, and it is usually asked at the worst possible moment. You will need certified copies for banks, insurance, property, benefits, and the estate, and most families underestimate how many. Order at least five, and closer to ten if there are multiple accounts.

A certified copy costs $15 from the Oklahoma State Department of Health Vital Records Service, and that fee includes the record search. If the record is not found, the search fee is not refunded, which is worth knowing before you order ten copies of a record filed under a name spelled differently than you expect.

In person: the state offers a Will Call pickup service, and some county health departments issue records directly.

Planning Ahead in Oklahoma
