Funeral Homes in Michigan: Verified Directory and Costs 2026

Michigan Funeral Home Directory: Real Costs, Real Rights, and Real Family Savings

Michigan families who lose someone tonight face a problem most state directories never mention. Under Article 18 of Public Act 299 of 1980 (MCL 339.1801) and MCL 333.2843, only a licensed Michigan funeral director can supervise the final disposition of a body, including burial, cremation, or donation. Michigan is one of the few states whose statute legally requires a licensed funeral director on every disposition, which makes the funeral home you call in the next 24 hours a higher-stakes decision in MI than in many other states. Below are verified Michigan funeral homes by city and county, real cost data from current industry studies, the federal and state rights every Michigan funeral home is legally required to honor, and the partner discounts and financing options that consistently save Michigan families thousands.

Memorial Merits is an editorial site, not a directory aggregator. Every listing on this page is matched against the Michigan LARA Verify a License portal before publish, and every cost figure, statute citation, and consumer right traces back to a primary source. Industry compliance is uneven; the Federal Trade Commission’s 2017 to 2018 Lansing-area undercover sweep audited 15 funeral homes across Lansing, East Lansing, Owosso, St. Johns, and Grand Ledge and found 7 of 15 in violation of the federal Funeral Rule, a 47 percent failure rate in a single state-level audit and one of the most concentrated enforcement actions in the rule’s 41-year history. The 2024 FTC nationwide phone sweep, the first telephone audit in agency history, added another Michigan funeral home (O.H. Pye III in Detroit) to the warning-letter record. Knowing your rights before you call is half the protection.

Editorial graphic of Michigan state outline in warm gold layered over the official Michigan State Flag background, Playfair Display title Funeral Homes in Michigan and italic subtitle Verified Directory Real Costs Real Rights centered horizontally and vertically over the outline, Memorial Merits wordmark in lower right corner.

Find a Funeral Home in Your Michigan City

Michigan funeral homes listed below by city, alphabetical. Each listing on this page is matched against the LARA Verify a License portal before publish, the official portal for the Michigan Board of Examiners in Mortuary Science. Use the county pill bar to jump to a specific Michigan county, or the table of contents at the top of the page to jump directly to your city. Michigan includes hundreds of cities, villages, and charter townships, so the directory below covers cities and townships at or above 50,000 population. Cities are added on a rolling basis as the Memorial Merits team completes verification, so additional Michigan municipalities may publish on this page after launch.

What a Michigan Funeral Actually Costs in 2026

The first number a Michigan funeral home gives you is rarely the lowest number you can pay. National medians from the NFDA 2023 General Price List Study put a traditional funeral with viewing and burial at $8,300 nationally and a cremation service with viewing and memorial at $6,280. Michigan-specific industry estimates from U.S. Funerals Online’s Michigan Funeral Costs Guide put the typical MI traditional funeral with burial near $9,000 before a cemetery plot or grave marker. The same source pegs Michigan’s average full-service cremation funeral at $6,548 and direct cremation low-end pricing in Detroit and Grand Rapids at $1,095.

Michigan runs above the national cremation rate, with roughly 63.4 percent of MI dispositions choosing cremation versus 61.9 percent nationally per NFDA’s most recent Cremation and Burial Report. Michigan’s cremation adoption has tracked steadily upward since the 2010s. The cards above frame the medians; what your family actually pays depends on the funeral home you call. Any Michigan funeral home is required by federal law to give you a written General Price List on request, no purchase required, in person or with accurate pricing on request by phone.

Where Michigan sits in the national funeral cost range

The lowest-cost states for traditional funerals (Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico) typically run $5,500 to $7,500. Michigan sits at the upper end of the Midwest average and slightly above the national median. Rural Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula counties trend lower than the Detroit metro and Grand Rapids metro.

Where Michigan metros land

The highest-cost states (New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, California) often run $9,000 to $14,000 or more for a traditional funeral. The Detroit metro can push into the lower end of this range, particularly in Oakland County’s higher-income communities. Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Ann Arbor typically run mid-tier nationally. Michigan’s high cremation adoption (63.4 percent) keeps the typical out-of-pocket meaningfully lower for families who choose cremation.

Source: Michigan-specific cost data from U.S. Funerals Online Michigan Funeral Costs Guide and Funeralocity Michigan averages, cross-referenced against NFDA national medians. NFDA paywalls state-specific medians, so the MI figures above are estimated ranges from industry aggregators rather than primary medians. Costs vary by funeral home and county; verify against any funeral home’s General Price List before signing.

Michigan Funeral Consumer Protection Laws

Michigan funeral homes operate under three layers of rules: the federal FTC Funeral Rule, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) Mortuary Science regulations under Article 18 of Public Act 299 of 1980, and the Michigan Prepaid Funeral and Cemetery Sales Act (Public Act 255 of 1986). Most MI families never learn what each layer actually protects.

The Michigan Board of Examiners in Mortuary Science, housed inside the LARA Bureau of Professional Licensing, licenses every funeral director and funeral establishment in Michigan and investigates complaints against them. Michigan has 2,045 mortuary science licensees, 112 resident trainees, and 697 funeral establishments under board oversight. Search any funeral director or funeral establishment by name, license number, or location at the LARA Verify a License portal. If a Michigan funeral home cheats your family, refuses to honor the FTC Funeral Rule, or pressures you into purchases you legally have the right to decline, you can file a complaint with the LARA Bureau of Professional Licensing at (517) 241-0199.

Michigan never requires embalming. Michigan Administrative Code R. 325.3 only requires embalming, refrigeration, or a sealed container if final disposition will not happen within 48 hours after death, and the 48-hour rule only applies to common-carrier transport across jurisdictions. Refrigeration or dry ice is a fully legal and substantially cheaper alternative, and the funeral home is required to disclose it as an option.

If you are buying a pre-need (prepaid) funeral contract in Michigan, the rules sit under the Prepaid Funeral and Cemetery Sales Act, Public Act 255 of 1986 (MCL 328.211 through 328.235). All funds received under a prepaid contract must be held in escrow for the benefit of the contract beneficiary. The buyer may cancel at any time before the death of the beneficiary upon 30 days’ written notice for nonguaranteed contracts. Annual statements of balance, fees, and refund eligibility are required by law. Always request the annual escrow report and verify the escrow account exists with a Michigan banking institution before signing.

If your family cannot afford a funeral in Michigan, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services State Emergency Relief (SER) Burials program pays up to $555 toward funeral home charges and up to $145 toward cemetery or crematory costs (a combined maximum of approximately $700). Application must be submitted no later than 10 business days after the burial, cremation, or donation. Eligibility is governed by Mich. Admin. Code R. 400.7034 and ERM 306, and county DHHS offices process applications.

One Michigan rule that does not apply in most states: under Public Act 57 of 2016 (MCL 700.3206a), Michigan residents can legally appoint a Funeral Representative to make all decisions about funeral arrangements, disposition, and disinterment, with priority over the standard next-of-kin order. The designation must be in writing, dated, and signed before two witnesses or notarized. This matters for blended families, estranged families, same-sex partners not legally married, military families with split custody arrangements, and anyone who wants to keep funeral decisions out of probate court.

Michigan also protects families from third-party casket retaliation. Funeral homes in Michigan cannot refuse a casket purchased from another vendor and cannot charge a handling fee for accepting one, under the FTC Funeral Rule and MCL 328.228 prohibited-conduct provisions.

For free price comparison sheets and consumer support, the Funeral Consumers Alliance publishes member-vetted resources and operates local affiliate chapters across Michigan.

Your Federal Rights at Any Funeral Home

Eight rights every funeral home in the United States is legally required to honor under the FTC Funeral Rule. They apply at every Michigan funeral home regardless of size, location, or family history. Most MI families never learn them in time.

1
Itemized General Price List

Every Michigan funeral home must give you a written General Price List on request. No fee, no purchase required.

2
Phone Pricing on Demand

Michigan funeral homes must give pricing over the phone. Compare two or three before visiting any.

3
Buy a Casket From Anywhere

No handling fee, no requirement to buy from the funeral home. Save thousands online.

4
No Embalming Required

Federal law does not require embalming for direct burial, direct cremation, or short-term holding. Michigan allows refrigeration as a legal alternative under Mich. Admin. Code R. 325.3.

5
Alternative Container Allowed

For direct cremation, a simple wood box or rigid container is allowed. Caskets are optional.

6
Decline Anything Optional

Only the basic service fee is non-declinable. Decline limousines, viewings, packages, anything not legally required.

7
Casket Price List in Writing

Before showing actual caskets, the funeral home must show you a printed Casket Price List.

8
Written Itemized Statement

Before any payment, you receive a written itemized statement of every selected good and service. Verify it.

The FTC enforces the rule through periodic undercover inspections. Michigan has one of the most concentrated state-level enforcement records in the country. The 2017 to 2018 Lansing-area sweep audited 15 funeral homes across Lansing, East Lansing, Owosso, St. Johns, and Grand Ledge and found 7 in violation, a 47 percent failure rate in a single audit. Named violators that entered the Funeral Rule Offenders Program for compliance correction included Gorsline Runciman (East Lansing), Nelson-House (Owosso), Keck-Coleman (St. Johns), Holihan-Atkin Barclay (Grand Ledge), Peters and Murray (Grand Ledge), Skinner Funeral Home (Lansing), and Paradise Funeral Chapel (Lansing). The 1995 A.H. Peters case in Grosse Pointe ended with a $60,000 civil penalty for failure to provide required price lists. The 2024 FTC phone sweep added O.H. Pye III Funeral Home in Detroit to the warning-letter record. Asking for the General Price List on the first call, in writing, is the single fastest way to find out which side of compliance the funeral home you are talking to lands on.

Funeral Financing for Michigan Families

The Michigan funeral home that gives your family a $9,000 estimate will often offer to finance it for you on the spot. The financing offered at the funeral home is rarely the best financing available to your family. Memorial Merits has partnered with Upstart, a lending platform that partners with banks to provide personal loans of $1,000 to $75,000 with funding as fast as one business day after acceptance. The Upstart platform’s underwriting model considers factors beyond credit score alone, including education and work history, which often produces competitive rates for Michigan families who would be denied or overpriced by a funeral home’s in-house financing. Checking your rate is a soft credit inquiry and does not affect your credit score.

Check Your Rate in 5 Minutes

Loans through Upstart from $1,000 to $75,000. Soft credit check, does not affect your credit score. Funding as fast as one business day after acceptance.

Check My Rate
Required disclosures. Your loan amount will be determined based on your credit, income, and certain other information provided in your loan application. Not all applicants will qualify for the full amount. Minimum loan amounts vary by state: Georgia ($3,100), Hawaii ($1,500), Massachusetts ($7,000). Maximum loan amounts may vary by state. The full range of available rates varies by state. The lowest rates are only available to the most qualified applicants. A representative example of payment terms for an unsecured Personal Loan is as follows: a borrower receives a loan of $10,000 for a term of 60 months, with an interest rate of 18.60% and a 7.82% origination fee of $782, for an APR of 22.69%. In this example, the borrower will receive $9,218 and will make 60 monthly payments of $259. APR is calculated based on 5-year rates offered in December 2025. There is no down payment and no prepayment penalty. Your APR will be determined based on your credit, income, and certain other information provided in your loan application. Not all applicants will be approved. If you accept your loan by 5pm EST (not including weekends or holidays), you will receive your funds the next business day. When the funds will be available to you will depend on your bank’s transaction processing time and policies. While most loans through Upstart are unsecured, certain lenders may place a lien on other accounts you hold with the same institution. There may be an option to secure your personal loan through Upstart with your vehicle, which will require a lien to be placed on the vehicle. It is important to review your promissory note for these details before accepting your loan. When you check your rate, we check your credit report. This initial soft inquiry will not affect your credit score. If you accept your rate and proceed with your application, we do another hard credit inquiry that will impact your credit score. If you take out a loan, repayment information may be reported to the credit bureaus. Although educational information is collected as part of Upstart’s rate check process, neither Upstart nor its bank partners have a minimum educational attainment requirement in order to be eligible for a loan.

Caskets and Urns: The Biggest Michigan Family Savings

The single largest variable in a Michigan funeral’s bottom line is the casket or urn. Funeral home casket pricing typically runs three to five times wholesale. The federal Funeral Rule guarantees Michigan families the right to buy from any source, and the funeral home is legally required to accept it without a handling fee. This rule alone saves the average MI family $1,000 to $3,000 per casket.

Discount Caskets: Save 30 to 70 Percent for Michigan Families

Memorial Merits’ direct partner ships caskets nationwide on the family’s preferred timeline, either to the funeral home or directly to the family. Caskets meet the same construction and safety standards as funeral home retail at a fraction of the price. Typical Michigan family savings: $1,000 to $3,000 per casket. Flat $299 shipping anywhere in Michigan.

View Discount Caskets ›

For families choosing direct cremation, the federal Funeral Rule allows a simple alternative container at a fraction of casket pricing. The funeral home is required to make this option available. Pulvis Art Urns, a Memorial Merits partner, ships handcrafted ceramic urns directly to Michigan families with an exclusive discount when the visitor uses the coupon code at checkout.

For Michigan Veteran Families: Federal Burial Benefits and MI’s National Cemeteries

If your family includes a veteran, federal benefits exist that many Michigan families never learn about until after they have already paid out of pocket. Michigan does not currently operate a state-funded standalone veterans cemetery, which sets MI apart from states like Texas (5 state cemeteries) and California (8 state cemeteries). Instead, two federal VA national cemeteries serve Michigan veterans: Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly and Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Veterans’ sections within county and private cemeteries cover the rest of the state.

Great Lakes National Cemetery

4200 Belford Road, Holly, MI 48442 (Holly Township, Oakland County). Phone 866-348-8603. Approximately 50 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. Casketed burial and in-ground burial of cremated remains for eligible veterans, spouses, and dependents. VA NCA Great Lakes.

Fort Custer National Cemetery

15501 Dickman Road, Augusta, MI 49012 (Kalamazoo County, just outside Battle Creek). Phone 269-731-4164. 770.4 acres, more than 33,000 interments. Located 6 miles west of Battle Creek and 12 miles east of Kalamazoo. VA NCA Fort Custer.

Burial at a VA national cemetery includes the gravesite, opening and closing of the grave, government headstone or marker, burial flag presentation, perpetual care, and Presidential Memorial Certificate at no cost to the family. Eligibility requires discharge other than dishonorable for the veteran, plus eligible spouses and dependents. The federal benefit does not cover funeral home charges (casket, transport, viewing), which the family still arranges with a private funeral home. The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency coordinates veteran burial assistance and headstone applications and is the right starting point for Michigan veteran families navigating the federal benefit.

Federal burial benefits sit on top of the national cemetery program for any veteran family.

VA Burial Allowance

For deaths on or after October 1, 2025: $1,002 burial + $1,002 plot = up to $2,004 for non-service-connected deaths. Up to $2,000 for service-connected deaths after September 11, 2001. VA Form 21P-530EZ.

National Cemetery + Honors

Free gravesite, headstone, perpetual care, burial flag, and Presidential Memorial Certificate. Plus Military Funeral Honors with Taps and flag folding for eligible veterans.

Memorial Keepsakes for the Days That Follow

The decision about a memorial keepsake is rarely a Day One decision. For most Michigan families it settles in around Day 5 to Day 30 after the service, when the immediate logistics have eased and the family is ready to think about something they will hold for years. We mention it briefly here because the visitor in acute crisis tonight is likely to come back looking for keepsake guidance later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a funeral cost in Michigan?

The average traditional funeral with burial in Michigan runs about $9,000 before cemetery costs, with the Detroit metro and Oakland County trending higher and rural Michigan running lower. Direct cremation can be as low as $1,095 in Detroit and Grand Rapids, and full-service cremation averages around $6,548 statewide. The funeral home is required to give you a written General Price List on request before you commit to anything. Sources: U.S. Funerals Online Michigan, NFDA 2023 GPL Study, FTC Funeral Rule.

Do I have to use a licensed funeral director in Michigan?

Yes. Michigan is one of the few states whose statute legally requires a licensed funeral director to supervise every final disposition, including burial, cremation, or donation. Under MCL 339.1801 (Article 18 of Public Act 299 of 1980) and MCL 333.2843, the funeral director or county clerk who certified the death certificate is the only party authorized to issue the burial-transit permit. Placing a chemical on or in a dead human body by an unlicensed person is a violation of Article 18. Families can still handle planning, ceremony, music, eulogies, and graveside details on their own, but the disposition cannot proceed without a Michigan-licensed funeral director’s involvement.

How do I verify a funeral home is licensed in Michigan?

Search the LARA Verify a License portal at val.apps.lara.state.mi.us, the official portal for the Michigan Board of Examiners in Mortuary Science. Both individual funeral directors and funeral establishments are licensed separately in Michigan. The portal returns the funeral director’s name, license number, status (active, inactive, suspended), and the licensed funeral establishment. If a funeral home cannot produce a current Michigan license number on request, walk away. The LARA Bureau of Professional Licensing also accepts complaints by phone at (517) 241-0199.

What is the cheapest cremation option in Michigan?

Direct cremation is the lowest-cost legal disposition in Michigan, with low-end pricing as low as $1,095 in Detroit and Grand Rapids and full-service cremation averaging around $6,548 statewide. Direct cremation skips embalming, viewing, and ceremony at the funeral home, and the family receives the cremated remains directly. Michigan does not enforce a flat 48-hour wait before cremation, but the practical waiting period is created by the required checkpoints (death record completion, burial-transit permit, county Medical Examiner sign-off on the cremation authorization). Written authorization from the legally designated next of kin or a Designated Funeral Representative is required.

Does Michigan help pay for a funeral if the family cannot afford it?

Yes. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services State Emergency Relief (SER) Burials program pays up to $555 toward funeral home charges and up to $145 toward cemetery or crematory costs (a combined maximum of approximately $700). Application must be submitted no later than 10 business days after the burial, cremation, or donation. Eligibility is governed by Mich. Admin. Code R. 400.7034 and ERM 306, and county DHHS offices process applications. Many Michigan families also turn to non-predatory personal loans through Upstart ($1,000 to $75,000) instead of the financing the funeral home offers, which often runs at much higher interest rates.

Does Michigan require embalming?

No. Michigan never requires embalming. Mich. Admin. Code R. 325.3 only requires embalming, refrigeration, or a sealed container if the body has not been buried, cremated, or transported within 48 hours of death, and the 48-hour rule applies only to common-carrier transport across jurisdictions. Refrigeration or dry ice is fully legal as a substitute for embalming for short-term preservation. For direct burial, direct cremation, or any timeline that completes disposition within 48 hours, no embalming or refrigeration is required.

Can someone other than next of kin make funeral decisions in Michigan?

Yes. Michigan is one of a handful of states that lets a person legally appoint a Funeral Representative to make all funeral, disposition, and disinterment decisions, with priority over the standard next-of-kin order. Under Public Act 57 of 2016, MCL 700.3206a, effective June 27, 2016, the designation must be in writing, dated, and signed before two witnesses or notarized. This matters for blended families, estranged families, same-sex partners not legally married, military families with split custody arrangements, and anyone who wants to keep funeral decisions out of probate court.

Are pre-need funeral contracts safe in Michigan?

Michigan has one of the stronger pre-need protection frameworks. Under the Prepaid Funeral and Cemetery Sales Act, Public Act 255 of 1986 (MCL 328.211 through 328.235), all funds received under a prepaid contract must be held in escrow for the benefit of the contract beneficiary. The buyer may cancel at any time before the death of the beneficiary upon 30 days’ written notice for nonguaranteed contracts. Annual statements of balance, fees, and refund eligibility are required by law. Where are Michigan’s veterans cemeteries?

Michigan does not currently operate a state-funded standalone veterans cemetery. Veterans use one of two federal VA national cemeteries in the state: Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly (Oakland County, about 50 miles northwest of Detroit) and Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta (Kalamazoo County, just outside Battle Creek). Burial benefits include grave plot, opening and closing, government headstone or marker, burial flag, and perpetual care at no cost to the veteran or eligible family member. Funeral home charges (casket, transport, viewing) are not covered. The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency coordinates veteran burial assistance and headstone applications. What does the FTC Funeral Rule require in Michigan?

The federal FTC Funeral Rule applies in Michigan the same as in every other state. Funeral homes must give an itemized General Price List on request in person, a Casket Price List in writing before showing actual caskets, an Outer Burial Container Price List on the same standard, and accurate price information by phone on request. They cannot require embalming for direct burial or direct cremation, cannot refuse a casket purchased from another source, and cannot charge a handling fee for a third-party casket. Michigan has one of the most concentrated FTC enforcement records on file: the 2017 to 2018 Lansing-area sweep found 7 of 15 funeral homes (47 percent) in violation of price-list disclosure requirements. Always request all three written price lists before paying. Source: FTC Complying with the Funeral Rule.

Can I have a home burial on my own land in Michigan?

Yes, with conditions. Michigan permits private burial grounds of less than one acre outside city or village limits. The property must be surveyed and recorded in the county register’s office; the land then becomes tax-exempt. Township zoning approval and a local health-department permit are required before establishing a family cemetery. A licensed Michigan funeral director still must supervise the disposition itself under Article 18. This option suits rural Michigan families with land already in the family but is rare in suburban and urban areas where zoning typically prohibits it.

Is there a complete guide that walks me through all of this?

Yes. The Funeral Planning Handbook from Memorial Merits walks Michigan families through the first 72 hours after a death, including the consumer rights covered above, casket purchase strategy, financing alternatives, veteran benefits, and the partner discounts that save the average family $5,000 or more.
