What a Funeral and Cremation Actually Cost in Maryland, and What You Do Not Have to Pay
A traditional funeral with burial and viewing runs $7,000 to $12,000 across Maryland once the casket, vault, service fees, and plot are combined, and a simpler direct burial still averages $5,694. Against that, verified providers arrange a direct cremation from about $975, with the Baltimore area starting near $1,395 and a statewide average of $2,419. The gap between the first quote a Maryland family hears and what the same service actually costs is one of the widest reasons to compare three price lists before signing anything.
This page holds the real numbers, county by county, next to the rights Maryland and federal law write into the process for you: the itemized price list a funeral home must hand you before you commit, the 12-hour cremation waiting period, and the 2024 Green Death Care Options Act that made Maryland one of the first states to legalize both water cremation and human composting. Maryland also runs above the national midpoint because Baltimore and the DC-metro counties of Montgomery and Prince George’s pull prices in two very different directions.
If the loss just happened and you only have a minute, start with the help paying section and the rights that protect you. Everything else will still be here when you are ready.
A funeral in Maryland costs far less than most families are first quoted. A traditional burial with viewing runs $7,000 to $12,000, while a direct cremation can be arranged from about $975. Maryland law also protects you in ways most families never hear about, and one 2024 law puts Maryland ahead of most of the country.
- Direct cremation: from about $975, with the statewide average at $2,419 and the Baltimore area starting near $1,395.
- Traditional burial with viewing: $7,000 to $12,000; a simpler direct burial averages $5,694.
- Green or natural burial: about $3,800, between direct cremation and a traditional burial.
- Water cremation and human composting are both legal in Maryland under the 2024 Green Death Care Options Act, with counties opting in one at a time.
- Cremation waits only 12 hours after death (COMAR 09.34.08.07), shorter than many states, plus a Medical Examiner authorization.
- No embalming is required by Maryland law.
- Maryland has no statewide pre-need guaranty fund, so verify any prepaid plan and favor established firms.
- Death certificates: $18 for the first certified copy, $20 for each additional copy, effective September 2025.

Every figure below comes from published price lists, Funeralocity Maryland market data, and national survey medians, not from a single funeral home’s marketing. Treat the averages as a starting point: Montgomery and Prince George’s in the DC-metro sit at the higher end for services, while much of the Eastern Shore and western Maryland sits below. The statewide direct-cremation average is $2,419, and a traditional funeral with viewing still ranks among the largest bills a family faces in a single week.
| Option | Maryland low | Maryland average | What it includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct cremation | $975 | $2,419 | Cremation only, no service or viewing |
| Full-service cremation | $4,000 | $7,023 | Viewing, service, urn, cremation |
| Direct or affordable burial | $5,694 | $5,694 | Simple burial, no viewing; plot extra |
| Traditional burial with viewing | $7,000 | $7,000 to $12,000 | Service, casket, vault, plot combined |
| Burial plot | Under $500 (Prince George’s) | About $2,000 | Grave only; Montgomery over $3,500; opening and closing adds $1,500 to $3,000 |
| Green or natural burial | $3,800 | About $3,800 | No vault or embalming; biodegradable container |
| Water cremation | Available | County opt-in; price varies | Alkaline hydrolysis, legal under the 2024 Green Death Care Options Act |
| Human composting | Available | Earth Funeral, Elkridge | Natural organic reduction, legal in Maryland |
Two line items deserve special attention. The cemetery plot is not included in the service figures above, and Maryland has one of the widest intra-state spreads in the country: a grave in Prince George’s County can run under $500, while a Montgomery County plot can top $3,500, with opening and closing adding $1,500 to $3,000 on top. And the casket is the single item families most often overpay on inside the funeral home, where the same casket can cost two to three times the direct-shipped price.
Estimate Your Own Maryland Funeral Cost
State averages only get you so far. A two-minute estimate built around your county, your choice of burial or cremation, and the services you actually want gives you a number you can hold any funeral home’s quote against, line by line.
Help Paying for a Maryland Funeral Right Now
Nobody plans to owe eight or ten thousand dollars in a week. Maryland does not run a broad statewide funeral or burial assistance program, so help is county-level: contact your local Department of Social Services and ask for the burial or cremation assistance unit, since some counties provide limited help for indigent decedents. The federal Social Security Administration also pays a one-time lump-sum death payment of $255 to an eligible surviving spouse or child. Beyond those, the three fastest legitimate ways Maryland families cover a bill are a free funeral fundraiser, a personal loan, and choosing direct cremation over a full-service funeral.
Start a Free Funeral Fundraiser
When the cost lands faster than the paychecks do, a fundraiser built for funerals gives everyone who wants to help one clear place to do it. It is free to start, and the funeral framing is why these pages so often cover most of the cost within days.

Start a Free Fundraiser ›Your Rights as a Maryland Family
The FTC Funeral Rule is federal law in all fifty states, and it exists because funeral pricing used to be a black box. It gives you the right to an itemized General Price List, a separate casket price list, and an outer-burial-container list, the right to choose only the goods and services you want with no forced bundling, the right to bring your own casket or urn with no handling fee, and the right to decline embalming, which Maryland law does not require.
When the Money Is Not There Yet
If the person who passed held the household together, a personal loan can cover the funeral now and let you pay it back over time. Checking your rate through the Upstart lending platform takes minutes and does not affect your credit.
Check Your Rate in Minutes
Checking does not affect your credit. Loans through the Upstart platform range from 1,000 to 75,000, and funds can arrive the next business day.
Check Your Rate ›Maryland Funeral Consumer Protection Laws
Maryland layers its own rules on top of the federal Funeral Rule. Funeral establishments and crematories are licensed under Title 7 of the Health Occupations Article, with practice rules in COMAR Title 09, Subtitle 34, administered by the State Board of Morticians and Funeral Directors. A few of these rules are unlike anything in neighboring states.

Create a Free Memorial ›How Much Does Cremation Cost in Maryland?
Direct cremation is the least expensive disposition in Maryland, arranged from about $975 with low-cost providers and starting near $1,395 in the Baltimore area. The statewide direct-cremation average of $2,419 is pulled up by funeral homes quoting the same no-frills service at two to three times that, which makes Maryland one of the states where comparing two phone quotes saves the most money. A full-service cremation with a viewing and ceremony averages about $7,023.
| Cremation type | Starts at | Maryland average | What it includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct cremation | $975 | $2,419 | Cremation only, no service or viewing. Baltimore-area providers start near $1,395; confirm any crematory fee is included. |
| Cremation with a service | $4,000 | about $7,023 | Viewing, service, urn, and cremation. |
| Water cremation | Available | County opt-in | Alkaline hydrolysis, legal under the 2024 Green Death Care Options Act. Price varies by provider and county; ask before you compare. |
One Way to Freeze Today’s Cremation Price
Cremation prices climb every year, and Maryland is climbing with the national curve. If you are planning ahead rather than in the middle of a loss, locking a rate today is worth a serious look.
Where Families Overpay on Urns
If cremation is the path, the urn is the one purchase where families most often overpay at the funeral home. Both options below ship directly to you or to any Maryland funeral home.
Cremation vs Burial in Maryland
The honest comparison is not about which choice is right, because that answer belongs to your family. It is about knowing what each path actually costs in Maryland before a package price makes the decision for you, and here the cemetery plot moves the math more than any other single line item.
| Direct cremation | Traditional burial | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical Maryland cost | $975 to $2,419 | $7,000 to $12,000 |
| Cemetery plot | Not required | About $2,000 on average, under $500 in Prince George’s, over $3,500 in Montgomery |
| Vault or grave liner | Not required | Often required by the cemetery, and adds to the total |
| Embalming | Not required | Commonly added, though Maryland never requires it |
| The bottom line | Lowest-cost path | Several thousand dollars higher on average once the plot is counted |
Why Cremation Prices in Maryland Keep Rising
Cremation is on its way to becoming the default in this country, and prices are rising with demand. The national cremation rate passed 62 percent in 2025 and is projected to keep climbing toward roughly 71 percent by 2035. Maryland tracks close to the national curve, which is exactly why locking a price today is worth considering if you are planning ahead.
| Year | U.S. cremation rate |
|---|---|
| 2005 | 32% |
| 2010 | 41% |
| 2015 | 49% |
| 2020 | 56% |
| 2023 | 60% |
| 2025 (projected) | 62% |
| 2030 (projected) | 67% |
| 2035 (projected) | 71% |
Lock In Today’s Price Before It Climbs
Since Maryland prices only move one direction, it helps to see the actual difference in dollars between locking a plan now and paying at the time of need. This free tool runs the numbers for you.
Water Cremation (Alkaline Hydrolysis) in Maryland
Water cremation, formally alkaline hydrolysis and sometimes called aquamation, uses water, alkalinity, and gentle heat instead of flame. Maryland legalized it under the Green Death Care Options Act signed in May 2024, so it is a legal in-state disposition, unlike in many neighboring states. The one nuance to know is that individual counties must opt in before facilities can operate locally: Baltimore City opted in first, and Montgomery County approved water cremation in September 2025, with more counties expected to follow.
Because the market is still young, a firm statewide price point is not yet locked, and cost varies by provider and by which county the service takes place in. If a provider quotes water cremation, ask exactly where the procedure is performed, whether that county has opted in, and what the all-in figure covers before you compare it against flame cremation.
Green Burial in Maryland
A natural burial in Maryland runs about $3,800, sitting between direct cremation and a traditional burial, with no embalming, no vault, and a biodegradable shroud or simple wooden casket. Maryland’s first dedicated natural burial cemetery, Serenity Ridge Natural Burial Cemetery in Windsor Mill, opened in January 2023 and is certified by the national Green Burial Council, with biodegradable containers only and no vaults.
Near the DC-metro, Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park in Clarksburg became the first Maryland cemetery certified as a Green Hybrid Burial Ground by the Green Burial Council. The Green Burial Association of Maryland tracks options statewide, and hybrid green sections continue to open inside conventional cemeteries, so if a ground you love is not listed here, call and ask whether they accept vault-free burial. A biodegradable casket or shroud completes the approach, and it can come from any seller you choose.
Shop Caskets Direct and Skip the Markup
Federal law requires every Maryland funeral home to accept a casket you bought elsewhere, with no handling fee. The same casket from the showroom often costs two to three times the direct-shipped price, so this is one of the clearest places to save.
Shop Caskets and Eco Caskets Direct
Traditional, eco, and willow caskets shipped to any Maryland funeral home or natural burial ground, at a fraction of in-house pricing.
See How Casket Savings Work ›Human Composting in Maryland
Natural organic reduction, commonly called human composting, gently transforms a body into soil over several weeks. Maryland legalized it under the same 2024 Green Death Care Options Act, becoming the ninth state to do so, and it is now available in-state. Earth Funeral opened Maryland’s first facility in 2026 in Elkridge, in Howard County, one of the largest natural organic reduction facilities in the world.
As with water cremation, the market is new and a firm Maryland-specific price is not yet locked, so ask any provider for the all-in figure and what it includes. If this option speaks to you, it belongs in your pre-planning conversation now, and it is worth confirming whether your county has opted in.
How to Get a Death Certificate in Maryland
You will need certified copies of the death certificate for banks, insurance, property, the DMV, and benefits, and most families underestimate how many. Plan for 6 to 10 certified copies, since each bank, insurer, brokerage, and pension office usually wants its own original. In Maryland, the first certified copy costs $18 and each additional copy ordered at the same time costs $20, a fee schedule effective September 2, 2025 through the MDH Division of Vital Records. Local county health departments also issue certified copies for recent deaths.
You can order in person at a local health department or the MDH Division of Vital Records in Baltimore, by mail with an application, or online through the state’s authorized vendor. In-person requests are often same-day, while mail requests run roughly two to four weeks depending on volume. Your funeral director routinely orders the first batch of certified copies on the family’s behalf as part of arrangements, so check the invoice against the $18 and $20 figures.
Maryland Funeral Home Directory
Every funeral home below was verified through at least two public sources and can be checked against the Maryland State Board of Morticians and Funeral Directors in seconds through the state license verification portal. No home pays to be listed, and the roster skews strongly toward family-owned independents, including several long-established Black-owned firms in Baltimore. A one-line cost note sits above each city so you can weigh a quote against the local reality before you call. Jump to your county, then your city.

Maryland Veterans Cemeteries
Maryland is unusually well served for veterans: it operates five state veterans cemeteries through the Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families, on top of three VA national cemeteries. Eligible veterans are buried at no cost, and spouses and dependents may also qualify. Bring the DD-214 (or NG Form 22) to verify eligibility, and confirm current benefit specifics before paying for anything a benefit already covers.

Cremation in Maryland: How It Works
Maryland licenses crematories and reduction facilities under Title 7 of the Health Occupations Article. A crematory needs an operating permit from the State Board of Morticians and Funeral Directors, and every cremation requires two authorizations: the legal next of kin signs the cremation authorization, and a Medical Examiner signs the disposition clearance. On top of that, a crematory may not proceed until at least 12 hours have elapsed from the time of death, which is shorter than the wait many states impose.
Some Maryland funeral homes operate their own on-site crematory, while many others contract with a licensed crematory. For your bill, that means the crematory fee is sometimes bundled and sometimes a separate line item, so always ask whether a quoted cremation price includes it before you compare. Verified homes with on-site or affiliated crematories include Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Services and Joseph H. Brown Jr. Funeral Home in Baltimore, McComas Family Funeral Homes in Harford County, Resthaven in Frederick, and Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam on the Eastern Shore.
Headstones and Grave Markers in Maryland
In Maryland, flat markers commonly run $400 to $1,500, single upright headstones $1,000 to $3,000, and custom uprights pass $5,000, with cemetery foundation and installation charges adding several hundred dollars or more. Federal law requires the cemetery to accept a marker you bought elsewhere as long as it meets their published size and material rules, so get those rules in writing before ordering anywhere.
Personalized Granite Markers from $100
Shipped direct to the cemetery for a fraction of the in-house price. Federal law requires the cemetery to accept an outside marker that meets its size rules.
Browse Markers ›Planning Ahead in Maryland
If you are reading this before a loss, you are in the strongest position a person can be in: every price is negotiable, every option is open, and Maryland now offers more choices than almost any state, from flame cremation to water cremation to human composting. The one caution worth repeating is that Maryland has no statewide pre-need guaranty fund, so a prepaid contract under Health Occupations Section 7-405 is only as safe as the establishment holding your money. Favor established firms, keep your paperwork, write your wishes down, and price the plot and the service separately. Your family inherits decisions already made instead of a bill they have to argue about in the hardest week of their lives.
